Guzman Taking Talents to Misericordia University

The recent Hightstown High School graduate gets personal best in the track Meet of Champions.

The last time Angel Guzman threw the discus for also turned out to be the best time.

Guzman finished his Hightstown High career by placing 15th in the discus at the Meet of Champions, held at Old Bridge on June 9 and 13. Guzman threw the discus 158' 10".

"That was his personal best," said Hightstown Coach Jim Firtek. "That's a good way to end his season."

It's also a great end to Guzman's high school career.

"He started the season with big goals," Firtek said. "He started off throwing in the high 130's and low 140's and he kept building throughout the season."

By the end of the season—when all of the major tournaments were being held—Guzman started getting into the 150's.

"In the discus, you can see which guys do the work," Firtek said. "There are so many things that can go wrong. The people that work the hardest don't have to think about it too much. It just becomes natural to them. They can just let all the work they do in practice take over."

Guzman is certainly one of those guys. What Firtek said impressed him the most was that Guzman was able to compete against guys with a considerable size advantage.

"When you get to this level, the guys are huge," Firtek said. "Angel is a big kid, but he's not huge. It's a testament to how hard he works that he could hang with those guys."

Guzman's hard work should continue in the fall when he plans to attend Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa.

"He's going to be missed," Firtek said. "He's someone that made strides since his freshman year. He filled in the spot and exceeded my expectations. I don't know if there's anything more that he could have done this season."
