HHS Girls' Track Duo to Compete in Group III Finals

Ahmed and Obst are hoping to make the Meet of Champions.

Aziza Ahmed and Dana Obst have both qualified for the Group III championships, keeping the season alive for the girls track team.

The two girls competed in the Central Jersey Group III meet this past weekend at Monmouth Regional. The top six girls in each event advance on to the Group III finals, which will be held Friday and Saturday at South Plainfield High School.

"I was expecting we would qualify more, but it was a draining couple of days on the kids," Hightstown Coach Don Hess said. "It was so hot out there."

Ahmed placed fourth in discus with a distance of 112' 11".

"That was Aziza's personal best by about eight feet," Hess noted. "You can do things like that in the throwing events. If you get all pumped up and do everything right with your technique, you can deliver a big one like that."

Obst placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 32 1 1/2".

If Ahmed and Obst can place in the top six again this weekend, they will advance on to the Meet of Champions, which features only the best the state has to offer.

"I think they both have a good chance to move on," Hess said.

While Ahmed and Obst were the only two girls to advance, Hightstown did have several other strong performances.

DeAsia Foye was seventh (31' 1/4") and Natayja Alexander eighth (30' 9") in the shot put.

In the javelin, Ryan Otero recorded a distance of 94 feet and Colleen Murphy posted a distance of 92 feet.

"Our weight teams have always been good," Hess said. "They're all young. They'll all be back and should have a good season next year."

Lindsay Redfern was ninth in the pole vault at 8 feet.

In the 200, Kelsey Lewis ran a 27.3, Lydia Walsh a 27.7 and Rachel Wilson a 27.7.

In the 100 hurdles, Cassidie Geffrard had a time of 16.8 and Sheila Gilchrist a 17.4.

In the 800, Hannah Foss had a time of 2:27.6 and Megan Mitchell a 2:35.5.

Perhaps the best thing about these results is they were primarily the work of underclassmen.

"Hannah Foss is only a freshman," Hess noted. "She's going to be a tremendous middle distance runner.

"We have a lot of young athletes. The future looks bright."
