Hightstown Boys Track Improves to 5-0

Coach Firtek says he's happy with "upset" win.

With a 5-0 record in the regular season, the boys track team is building up momentum for the upcoming tournaments.

"We'll see what happens, but we have a lot of competitors that can take the next step at the county and state level," Hightstown Coach Jim Firtek said.

The Mercer County Tournament will be held at Hamilton's Steinert High Schoolon May 14. The state tournaments will be held two weeks after that, starting with the sectionals.

In its most recent action, Hightstown swept a tri-meet from Hamilton (99-41) and West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional South (77-63). As good as Hightstown is, only the Hamilton win was expected.

"Everyone had to deliver a great team effort," Firtek said of the win over WW-P South. "We pulled off what I consider an upset win. When you look at it on paper and do the match-ups for each event, our kids performed better than expected."

Eric Anderson was certainly at his best. He won the 100 (11.1), 200 (22.6) and 400 (50.9) against both Hamilton and WW-P South. Anderson also joined Joey Lenart, Emmanual Marfo and Tyler Foss to win the 4x400 (3:31.8) against both teams.

Angel Guzman had wins in the shot put (45' 9 1/2") and discus (152' 2") against both teams.

Steven Segal and Andrew Kim — both clearing 10 feet — took the top two spots in the pole vault. Markis Rey (19' 10 1/2" in the long jump) also had wins against both teams.

Cameron Harper's distance of 35' 6 3/4" produced a win in the triple jump against WW-P South.

Tyler Foss had wins in the 800 (2:03.7) and 1600 (4:35.8) against Hamilton.

Rey (5' 3" in the high jump), Mitchell Nicklaus (141' 8" in the javelin) and Luke Dermody (10:09.1 in the 3200) also had wins against Hamilton.

"We knew we would be competitive, but 5-0 is a bit of a surprise," Firtek said. "Beating West Windsor South was a bit of a surprise."

Heading into the big tournaments, the Hightstown boys would no doubt love to keep surprising people with their success.
