Hightstown Girls Track Wins First Two Meets

Discus team wins at Mercer Relays

Thus far this season, the weather has done a better job of slowing down the Hightstown High School girls track team than the opposition.

Through the first three weeks of the season, Hightstown has only competed three times. It won two meets and also had a good showing in the Mercer County Relays.

"We're a young team, but we have some talented girls," Hightstown Coach Don Hess said. "I think the leadership of the seniors has prevailed. We're doing quite well because of that leadership. They have the freshmen and sophomores pumped up."

Aziza Ahmed and Allison Mitchell combined to win the javelin at the Mercer Relays on Apr. 16 with a total distance of 171' 1".

Hightstown placed in eight events, including thirds in the javelin and pole vault. Colleen Murphy and Ryan Otero were third in the javelin with a combined distance of 176' 6". Lindsay Redfern and Kira Costantino were third in the pole vault.

The shuttle hurdles team of Andrea Desmond, Cassidie Geffrard, Sheila Gilchrist and Vivian Harris was fourth in a time of 1:03.3. The 4x400, shot put, 4x200 and 4x1600 teams all placed sixth.

In regular season action, Hightstown defeated both Steinert (103-37) and Allentown (94-46).

Against Steinert on Apr. 7, Hightstown had four girls win at least two events. Andrea Desmond won the 400 hurdles (1:12), 100 hurdles (17) and 100 (13.4). Hannah Foss won the 800 (2:34.4) and 1600 (5:36).  Lydia Walsh won the 200 (28), 400 (1:03.7) and high jump (4' 6"). Not too bad for a trio of underclassmen.

"We have some talented youngsters," Hess said. "They are really coming along."

Kelsey Lewis won the long jump (14' 6") and triple jump (28' 1 1/2").

Aziza Ahmed won the discus with a distance of 102' 3".

"That's the best discus throw in the county so far this year," Hess noted.

Against Allentown on Apr. 13, Foss won the 800 (2:31.4) and 1600 (5:35.2). Walsh won the 400 (1:03.9). Nikki Khandelwal won the 3200 (12:41). Desmond won the 100 hurdles (17.1). Mitchell won the discus (100' 2"). Redfern won the pole vault (7' 6").

Hightstown will be after its third win against Princeton on Monday.

"That's a big conference meet," Hess noted.
