Hightstown softball off to 0-3 start

Schedule too much in opening week

One of the main reasons the Hightstown High softball team finished the first week 0-3 was, obviously, the schedule.

Hightstown is coming off a 6-15 season in 2010.

"During the pre-season, I thought we'd be better off this season," Hightstown Coach Tim Kalick said. "We still might be. That was a tough schedule for the first week of  the season."

Steinert is always one of the better CVC teams. West Windsor South is tough. And Robbinsville is a rising power.

"We opened up with three of the top teams in the conference," Kalick noted. "We got tested right away."

Hightstown lost its season opener to West Windsor South, 5-0, on Apr. 2.

Nicole Petti pitched well, allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. Petti and Jenna Marcus will do the pitching this year for Hightstown. Whichever one is not on the mound will play at first base.

Randi Kosmides tripled for Hightstown's lone hit against West Windsor. Kosmides is Hightstown's catcher.

"We need to get more offense," Kalick noted.

Hightstown was defeated by Steinert, 13-3, on Apr. 4.

Jenna Marcus threw two effective innings of relief, allowing just one run. She also hit and a RBI. Cammie Klein also had a hit and a RBI. Jackie Ward, Amanda Oberg and Nicole Petti all scored runs.

Klein is the team's third baseman. Ward plays center field. Oberg plays second base.

Hightstown was defeated by Robbinsville, 7-1, on Apr. 6.

Kelsey Brennan homered to score Hightstown's run. Amanda Oberg and Jenna Marcus also had hits.

Brennan is the team's shortstop. Sam LeBlanc plays right field. Rebecca Connolly and Carly DeCristofaro split time in left. Other members of the team are Michelle Arakaki and Kelly McGlew.

"We had a tough first week," Kalick said. "We were up against three of the best teams in the area, but you have to play them some time. For the most part, we were in the games. I think that start could help us out down the line."

Actually, getting a bit battle tested could start helping Hightstown out this week. Hightstown is scheduled to play Princeton on Apr. 12, Ewing on April 13 and Lawrence on Apr. 15. Those are more winnable games than West Windsor South, Steinert and Robbinsville.

"If we can come out of that week 2-4, that'd be nice," Kalick said. "Obviously, we'd like to win all three games. We just really need to win two of the three."
