Over the past 24 hours, the Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints from residents who were contacted by a person posing as a Sheriff’s Sergeant stating they owed fine money for missing a court-ordered appearance, Kemler said.

The caller was reported to speak aggressively, threatening arrest for contempt of court.

They also instructed residents to withdraw cash from their bank and meet at a kiosk to pay anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 for restitution, officials said.

“These calls are clearly scams,” Kemler said. “At no time will a Mercer County Sheriff’s Officer call a resident and ask for money related to a court order or subpoena enforcement.”
