Winter Kitchen Event This Weekend In Mercer County

Visitors can experience the sights, smells and tastes of these two very different types of kitchens on Saturday, March 4, when Howell Living History Farm hosts its annual Winter Kitchen Program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cooking activities, recipe sampling and hands-on experiences are planned. In the morning, the kitchens of the two farmhouses will be used to prepare meals that farmers would have had for their noontime dinner.

Visitors young and old will have opportunities to help in both kitchens modeled from the 1790s and the 1890s, from bringing wood to fuel cooking operations to sifting flour, making butter and washing dishes.

Outside the house, visitors can help farmers gather eggs from the henhouse, split firewood and get ice from the icehouse. Parking and admission are free.

Cooks interested in participating in an all-day, open-hearth cooking workshop should contact Kathy Brilla at the farm office. The 2017 workshop series begins on March 11 and includes workshops in woodstove cooking.

The cost of this program is $60 and pre-registration is required.

Howell Farm is owned by the County of Mercer and maintained by the Mercer County Park Commission. It is located on Valley Road, just off Route 29, in Hopewell Township. The GPS address is 70 Woodens Lane, Hopewell Township, NJ 08530.
