$1 Million Lotto Ticket Stolen By Edison Cashier: Prosecutor

When the winner went to claim her $1 million prize, she was handed two scratch off tickets instead.

EDISON, NJ — An Edison convenience store employee was arrested on Friday for stealing a lottery ticket worth $1 million, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

Rayhan Sorwar, 36, of Edison was charged with theft of movable property, conspiracy to commit money laundering and attempted money laundering for allegedly stealing the ticket.

According to Carey, a customer presented the winning scratch-off ticket to Sorwar on Sept. 6. Instead of giving the customer a claim form to cash out the $1 million dollars, Sorwar handed her two unscratched tickets and pocketed the winner, Carey said.

Officials became suspicious when Sowar's wife tried to cash the ticket at the Lottery Commission on the 19th, Carey said, prompting the investigation.

“This office consistently investigates and prosecutes theft, corruption, and money laundering cases,” Prosecutor Carey said. “We will continue to work with our partners to target such behavior and seek restitution for our victims.”
