81-Year-Old Ejected From Ambulance In NJ Crash: Police

The patient, an 81-year-old Iselin resident suffered serious injuries to his left wrist, police said.

EDISON, NJ — An 81-year-old patient was ejected from an ambulance after it struck a railroad bridge in Edison over the weekend, authorities said.

On Saturday, Jan. 8 at 11.13 p.m., an ambulance from South Plainfield was traveling south on Parsonage Road when it struck the railroad bridge, Edison Deputy Police Chief Robert Dudash said.

The box portion of the ambulance struck the bottom of the bridge and the back compartment dislodged and tilted backward, Dudash said. The impact caused the patient to be ejected from the ambulance and onto the road, according to the police.

The 81-year-old Iselin resident suffered serious injuries to his left wrist and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Police are not aware why the patient was in the ambulance, but according to the report filed, the ambulance was headed to JFK University Medical Center and possibly diverted.

No charges have been filed.
