Blizzard 2026: Edison, Metuchen School Closures, Garbage Cancellations & More

Here's everything you need to know as the powerful blizzard slams NJ.

EDISON, NJ — Schools in Edison and Metuchen will be closed Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, as a major winter storm brings blizzard conditions to New Jersey. Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency as the storm moved into the state, with 21 counties under a blizzard warning. The National Weather Service forecast 10 to 20 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall expected Sunday night into Monday morning. Wind gusts in coastal counties could reach 55 mph, with snowfall rates possibly exceeding 2 inches per hour.

Edison

Edison Township Public Schools will be closed Monday, Feb. 23. All before- and after-school programs and athletic activities are also canceled. The designated makeup day for the closure will be Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

Garbage and recycling collection scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23 has been canceled. Pickup will take place Tuesday, Feb. 24, and Tuesday's regular schedule will resume as normal thereafter.

Residents are advised to move vehicles off roadways. A winter storm warning is in effect from Sunday, Feb. 22 through Monday, Feb. 23. Township officials said ticketing will be enforced and urged residents to have cars off streets by 11 p.m. Sunday. Residents should avoid travel as conditions deteriorate.

Metuchen

Metuchen Public Schools will be closed Monday. Superintendent Vincent Caputo announced the closure on Sunday. As a result, Tuesday, June 23, will now be a school day.

Mayor Jonathan M. Busch said forecasts are calling for approximately 18 to 22 inches of snow. Department of Public Works crews began salting and plowing operations Sunday evening and will run rotating shifts through the night and into Monday.

Residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel once conditions deteriorate to allow plows full access to streets.

With heavy snow and strong wind gusts expected, officials expressed particular concern about power outages.

Residents who lose power should report it directly to PSE&G through the utility's website, mobile app or by calling (800) 436-7734.

Anyone who sees downed wires should assume they are live and call 9-1-1 immediately.
