Swamp Tracks

This exhibition is inspired by the woods, jungles, backyards and swamps in and around Metuchen and its environs that hold significance to the artists. Both grew up in town and have spent a significant amount of time photographing and exploring the natural world around them. The physical tracks we (humans & animals) make through the woods, whether it be deer paths or roadways, create runoff pockets where what we traditionally call nature, is redefined to include the debris of our cultural ecology. Backyards, patches of forest, swamps, public parks, parking lots, are all fair game when finding traces of beauty, rhythm and harmony in sometimes unexpected places. The photographs in this exhibition are akin to musical notes, or samples, that when sequenced together form a new track or song; a swamp track. The literal tracks of rail lines and highways have altered the landscape surrounding Metuchen, and the town itself in many many ways. In particular for this exhibition the artists use repetition and close views of the nature to riff on the vibrancy that still exists in this heavily populated and transitory landscape in central New Jersey. Even though there is a diminishing amount of places to experiencethe plurality of nature, there's still some magic and beauty and redemption and wildness in these places, even in our backyards, in the everyday landscape that surrounds us.
