EDISON, NJ — The Council recently adopted an ordinance authorizing a rights of way agreement between Comcast and Edison for cable and internet service.

Comcast will now be in competition with Optimum for customers.

“This is going to pave the competition and it's really good to see that other companies are willing to come and set up infrastructure in this town,” Councilman Ajay Patil said. “We should support this, so we don't talk about optimum problems.”

Comcast will be constructing cable and broadband fiber networks throughout town, and they are expected to begin work immediately, Township Law Director Louis Rainone said.

Council president John Poyner said he was glad to see additional competition in town for TV and internet services.

“Let’s be honest, what will be installed will be the most up-to-date items out there which in theory should provide us much better service," Poyner said.

The ordinance passed unanimously.

“We are continuously looking at opportunities to bring our state-of-the-art products and services to more consumers and businesses where it is geographically and economically feasible to do so, and we look forward to bringing our Xfinity 10G Network to Edison providing residents with access to Comcast’s full suite of Xfinity and Comcast Business services,” Comcast said in a statement.

One of Mayor Sam Joshi's election platforms was to provide Edison with better internet access and end the monopoly of Optimum.

"I promised to end Optimum’s monopoly for our families, and after numerous discussions with Comcast executives, it’s exciting to know that Edison’s future will now include multiple options and residents will have the freedom to fairly choose the right service provider for their families," Joshi told Patch.
