Edison Man Fatally Struck By Police Car, State Investigating

Julius Filep of Edison died after he was struck by an East Brunswick police car responding to a separate incident on Aug. 1.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – An East Brunswick Police Department patrol car fatally struck a resident on Rt. 18 on Sunday, authorities said.

Julius Filep, 55, of Edison, died after he was struck by a patrol car driven by Officer Mitchell Ngai of the East Brunswick police department, the New Jersey Attorney General’s office said in a statement.

Ngai was on duty and responding to a reported motor vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of the road, according to a preliminary investigation.

He was traveling northbound in the vicinity of the reported accident around 3:35 a.m., when he struck Filep, who was walking on the road in front of 260 Route 18, the Attorney General’s office said.

Medical aid was administered to Filep, who was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:13 a.m., according to the Attorney General’s office.

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death. Ngai has been a police officer since 2019, NJ.com reports.
