Edison Memorial Day Parade This Sunday

Michael Meehan, a three-decade member and chaplain of VFW Post 3117, is the parade's grand marshal.

From Edison Township: Edison Township’s 56th annual Memorial Parade will kick off at noon on Sunday (May 27) along Plainfield Avenue, from Division Street to Oakland Avenue, and finishing at American Legion Father & Son Post 435. Edison has named Michael Meehan, a three-decade member and chaplain of VFW Post 3117, as parade Grand Marshal. Meehan served in the Army’s 25th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict and, after rotating stateside, served in the 11th Airborne Brigade. As a civilian, Meehan had a nearly 30-year career as a Newark police officer.

Meehan is recognized in the Edison community for his charitable work, including organizing bingo and other activities, for older and disabled vets at the N.J. Veterans Memorial Home in Menlo Park, said Ken Durkin, Post 3117’s commander. Sunday’s parade will also feature 60 veteran organizations and military reserve units, civic and community groups, school and youth sports organizations, area businesses, police and fire departments, volunteer fire and first aid squads, and antique automobile clubs. There will be performance by marching bands from Edison and J.P. Stevens high schools, Shore Brass Band of Monmouth County, and St. Columcille United Gaelic Pipe Band of Kearny. Once again, the parade will feature its popular “Most Patriotic Bicycle Decorating Contest,” with prizes awarded at American Legion Post 435 for creative youngsters.
