Edison Receives $590,251 In Federal Grant For Affordable Housing

EDISON, NJ — Edison received $590,251 in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Monday.

The grant was given to fund local programs that provide affordable housing, community development and economic opportunity, and support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Edison's grant comes through the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBGP).

The CDBGP grants not only help in providing housing and suitable living environment, but also expand economic opportunities for low and moderate-income residents.

HUD released $5.5 billion in funding and New Jersey was awarded $147,874,036.

Justin Scheid, HUD Newark Field Office Director said the funding will provide much-needed Community Planning and Development funding to communities across the Garden State.

“Cities, counties, and communities across New Jersey will be able to use this vital funding to develop viable communities by creating and retaining jobs and providing housing, services, and supports to those who need it most,” Scheid said in a statement.

James Arthur Jemison, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, said the funding comes at a “critical time for our country,” when these programs are needed more than ever.

“These core programs provide our local partners the funding they need to provide homes and vital services to some of our neighbors in need,” Acting Secretary Matt Ammon said in a media statement.
