METUCHEN, NJ — Metuchen has secured $500,000 in the New Jersey state budget for the preservation and enhancement of Memorial Park, Mayor Jonathan M. Busch announced.

Busch called it an unprecedented level of state investment in the historic site, which has served as one of the borough's most meaningful spaces for more than a century.

"I'm proud to share that Metuchen has secured $500,000 in the New Jersey State Budget for the preservation and enhancement of our historic Memorial Park, an unprecedented level of State investment in this treasured community asset," Busch said.

The mayor said the funding came together during a difficult state budget cycle and credited the borough's 18th District legislative delegation for helping secure the investment.

"In one of the most challenging State budget cycles in recent memory, this commitment once again reflects what can be accomplished when local and state government work together on behalf of our community," Busch said. "We identified Memorial Park as a priority for Metuchen and requested State support, and we're grateful to our outstanding 18th District legislative delegation, Senator Patrick Diegnan, and Assemblymen Rob Karabinchak and Sterley Stanley, for championing that request and helping bring this investment home."

Memorial Park honors Metuchen residents who died while serving in the U.S. military and hosts the borough's annual Memorial Day and POW/MIA recognition ceremonies, according to Busch.

The mayor noted the timing of the investment, coming as the country marks its 250th anniversary this year.

"As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, it's especially meaningful to invest in a place that reminds us of the generations of Americans whose service and sacrifice made that history possible," he said.

Busch said the funding builds on the borough's ongoing efforts to preserve its history and honor veterans.

"This funding is another important step in preserving Metuchen's history, honoring those who have served our nation, and ensuring Memorial Park remains a place of remembrance for generations to come," he said.
