Somerset Student Heads to National Scripps Spelling Bee After Regional Victory

SOMERSET, NJ — A Somerset student is heading to the national stage after an impressive performance at the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee.

Yajur Subramaniam, a student at Cedar Hill Preparatory School, won the regional competition after competing against top spellers from Essex, Somerset, and Union counties at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) in Orange, NJ.

With the win, Yajur now advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., where students from across the country will compete in one of the nation’s most prestigious academic competitions.

The final moments of the competition came down to the word “meringue,” which Yajur spelled correctly to secure the championship. Throughout the event, competitors were challenged with demanding words such as sepulchral, hydrocortisone, phosphorescent, and glial, testing not only spelling ability but also vocabulary knowledge, linguistic roots, and composure under pressure.

The victory highlights Cedar Hill Prep’s strong emphasis on academic excellence and intellectual curiosity. The Somerset-based independent school encourages students to develop deep subject knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the confidence to perform at the highest levels of academic competition.

Yajur will travel to Washington, D.C. this May to compete in the national championship, representing both his school and the region.
