EDISON, NJ - The Edison Public Library will host a free public program exploring the largely overlooked role of African Americans in the American Revolution, featuring the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum on Monday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at the library's main branch, 340 Plainfield Ave.

The program will examine how African Americans throughout New Jersey participated in the Revolutionary War, the lives they built after the conflict ended, and how the ideals of revolution affected both enslaved and free Black communities in the years following 1776.

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum, known as SSAAM, interprets the history of the African American community in the Sourland Mountain region of central New Jersey — a history shaped by slavery, freedom, and resilience. The museum documents the lives of formerly enslaved people, free Black communities, and veterans connected to historic sites including the Stoutsburg Cemetery and Mt. Zion AME Church.
