The law applies to both low-speed electric bicycles and motorized bicycles as defined by state law and will go into effect on July 19.
The new requirements include:
The law defines a low-speed electric bicycle as a pedal-assist bike that provides assistance only while pedaling and up to 20 mph. Motorized bicycles include certain pedal-assist or throttle-equipped models capable of speeds up to 28 mph with pedal assistance or 15 mph using throttle alone.
The Englewood Police Department encourages riders to familiarize themselves with the new regulations before they take effect. For additional information, residents can visit the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission's website.
