Celebrate Easter at Historic St Paul's

Celebrate Holy Week and Easter in Word, Song, and Sacrament at St Paul's in Englewood

Historic St Paul’s in Englewood will celebrate Holy Week and Easter beginning on Palm Sunday, March 20, a service every evening at 7, Monday through Saturday, and culminating with two services on Sunday, March 27. One of the oldest churches in the city, Historic St Paul’s has long been noted for its excellent music program and wide outreach throughout Bergen County and beyond.

The St Paul’s Choir School will sing the ancient service of Tenebrae on Wednesday, March 23. This ancient service of light and darkness will be sung by the St Paul’s Choir School, our award-winning after school program for elementary through high school students. On Thursday, March 24, the observance begins with a community meal at 6 p.m. and Footwashing, Communion, at 7 followed by a vigil until the next morning. Good Friday will be observed with a Stations of the Cross service especially suited for children and families at 11. A midday service at noon will include the reading of the St John Passion, the Solemn Collects and Communion from the reserved sacrament. The 7 p.m. evening service will feature Thomas Tallis’ beautiful “Lamentations of Jeremiah.”

On Saturday, March 26 at 7 p.m., the parish will celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter. This service features lighting of the new fire, recounting of the prophecies, baptism, and the first Eucharist of Easter. Everyone is invited to bring noisemakers to welcome the risen Christ as we acclaim “Alleluia, Christ is Risen!” Easter Day, March 27, will begin with a short Eucharist with music in the chapel. At 10:30, the main choral Eucharist will feature St Paul’s Brass, Organ and Timpani and the combined choirs, with traditional hymns, works by Bach, Pergolesi, and Handel. The service ends with everyone singing the famous “Hallelujah Chorus.” Fr. Bill Allport, St Paul’s rector, will deliver an inspiring Easter message of hope and joy. Extra parking on Easter Day will be available at Depot Square.
