What was your inspiration to become a doctor? My next door neighbor was the Chairman of Pathology at Lenox Hill Hospital in the 1970s. He allowed me into the pathology lab when I was in 9th grade and I got to assist in the work. It was inspiring.
How did you come to specialize in facial plastic surgery? I liked surgery but only the facial area. So I did my residency in Otolaryngology and felt drawn to head and neck surgery. I realized I like reconstruction. So facial plastic surgery just seemed to fit.

Which patient throughout your career inspired you most and why? When I worked in Texas, there was a woman who became my patient who had end stage breast cancer and wouldn't quit. She would come to my office not to ask for help but just to ask how my day was going. She did it every week until she passed away.
Tell us about the patient whose life you changed the most and why? There was a patient who was suffering from sinus cancer. The cancer had spread from his palate to his sinus. Other physicians in the area didn't treat it completely and the President of the Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery at the time, who was my colleague in town, called me to ask if I would help him, as he trusted only me. I performed the surgery and there was no recurrence.
