Election Preview: 37th Legislative District

Democrats look to extend their record of service.

Democrats Gordon M. Johnson and Valerie Vainieri Huttle are looking to be re-elected to represent the state Assembly’s 37th Legislative District Tuesday.

They are running against Republicans Joseph M. Fiscella and Gino Tesaro.

Johnson, a former major in the U.S. Army Reserve, has served in the Assembly since 2002. He has been the deputy speaker since 2014. An “independent consultant” by vocation, he served as Bergen County sheriff from 2001 to 2002 and as undersheriff from 1999 to 2001 and 2002 to 2005.

Johnson serves on the Assembly’s Commerce and Economic Development Committee and is vice chairman of the Budget Committee and chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Vainieri Huttle, a funeral director, has served in the Assembly since 2006. She is chairwoman of the Human Services Committee and serves on the Tourism, Gaming, and the Arts and on the Legislative Select Committee on Investigation.
