25 Kids Hurt After Englewood School Bus Rear-Ended: Police

Breaking: The bus was hit while taking the kids back from a field trip, police said.

ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Twenty-five kids and eight adults on a school bus were taken to the hospital when an SUV rear-ended it Thursday afternoon, police said.

The bus was struck at 4:04 p.m. at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Knickerbocker Road when it was hit by the SUV, said Capt. Timothy Torell.

The bus was returning from a field trip associated with the Korean Community Church on Tenafly Road in Englewood, said Torell, but he did not know exactly where the bus was returning from.

Some of the kids complained of dizziness and bumps and bruises, Torell said. No serious injuries were reported.

The SUV's driver , a 51-year-old Paterson woman, complained of minor injuries, Torell said.

As a precaution, all 25 kids, seven chaperones, and the bus driver, a 45-year-old Englewood woman, were taken to local hospitals. Half were taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. The other half was taken to Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, Torell said. The SUV driver was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

All 22 patients taken to Holy Name were in stable condition Thursday night, said Jessica Griffin, hospital spokesperson.

Authorities were investigating the crash. No charges have been filed.

It was the second school bus to be involved in a crash Thursday.

A school bus was hit on Interstate 287 in Pompton Lakes just before 1 p.m., State Police said. Only two people were on that bus and emergency medical personnel did not respond to the crash.

Two people, a student and a teacher, from Paramus, were killed May 17 when their school bus collided with a dump truck on Interstate 80. The bus was also on a field trip to Waterloo Village. The other 43 people on the bus were injured, some critically.
