From Medicine to the Stage. Doctor to Act in Verismo Opera's Carmen.

Dr. James Garvin will perform in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera's Carmen at the Bergen Performing Arts Center.

Dr. James Garvin, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. will leave medicine briefly on April 26 and perform in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera’s Carmen at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC). Dr. Garvin will assume the acting role of Lillas Pastia, an innkeeper.

Dr. Garvin has appeared in several productions of Verismo Opera, the only grand opera company in Bergen County, New Jersey. He performed supernumerary, nonspeaking roles, such as a cardinal, a scribe, and a member of a firing squad. He was a soldier in Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida and even a corpse in Giacomo Puccini’s hilarious dark comedy Gianni Schicchi.

He has been involved with Verismo Opera, the house opera company of bergenPAC, for several years in various capacities and serves as president of the board of trustees. In April 2012, he received the organization’s Volunteer of the Year award in recognition of his contributions.
