Police Looking For French Tourist With Dementia Who Went Missing Tuesday

Jose Moreira, 77, was last seen on foot at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the northwest section of Englewood near the Tenafly-Bergenfield border.

ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Police are asking the public's help in trying to locate a French tourist with dementia who went missing Tuesday.

Jose Moreira, 77, is visiting family in Englewood. He is "totally unfamiliar with the area," said Detective Capt. Timothy Torell.

Moreira "has no phone and, besides dementia, has other medical issues that could be life threatening without the proper medication or care," Torell said. "He doesn’t even have a bottle of water on him as far as we can determine."

Moreira was last seen on foot at 9:30 a.m. in the northwest section of Englewood near the Tenafly-Bergenfield border, police said. Moreira has dementia and is unfamiliar with the area.

Englewood and Tenafly police officers and sheriff's officers are using dogs and drones to help locate Moreira. Authorities are reviewing video surveillance footage to try and determine what direction Moreira might have gone.

Moreira is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 145 lbs., has brown eyes, a light complexion and is bald, Torell said. He was wearing a tan polo shirt, jeans and blue-and-black-striped shoes, police said.
