10-Year Old Powerlifter Sets Women's World Record

Naomi Kutin, a Fair Lawn fifth grader, set the women's squat world record on Sunday

Ten-year-old "Supergirl" Naomi Kutin continues to amaze with her displays of raw strength and determination.

The Fair Lawn fifth-grader set a new women's powerlifting world record for the 97-pound weight class Sunday at the Raw Unity Meet in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The event, an invitational for elite powerlifters, had never invited a competitor younger than 14, but made an exception for Kutin because of her extraordinary achievements to date, her father Ed said.

Kutin, who weighs just under 93 pounds, squatted 214.9 pounds -- more than twice her body weight -- to reclaim the world record from 44-year-old Ana Geitner, of Germany.

Kutin, who began powerlifting in April 2010, first set the 97-pound world record last July at age 9, but Geitner bested it with a 209-pound squat last September.

"When I was younger, my friends would be doing a lot of things that I couldn't do, and I wanted to do something extraordinary," Kutin told Corpus Christi television station KiiiTV, after setting the record. "I wanted to break a record of some sort and I just really wanted to get this record."

Congratulations on Kutin's achievement poured in to the comment section of the website PowerLiftingWatch.com, which ran a story about her achievement.

"The more I think about this the more impressed I am," commented Ken Ufford. "This is one of the more impressive things I have seen on here for quite some time. 10 years old and over double bodyweight squat and pull! That is really really unreal and very impressive."

, Ed Kutin said he realized his daughter had a special talent during one of her karate lessons a couple years back.

"I saw the drills they were doing with the kids and noticed that she was…very strong and fast compared to the other kids," he said.

So Ed, who had himself been a powerlifter for over a decade, approached his daughter with the suggestion that she try powerlifting for herself.

As they say, the rest is herstory.
