2 Men Charged In Fair Lawn Carjacking: Police Blotter

A third person involved in the carjacking remains at large, authorities said.

Carjacking: Fair Lawn Police responded to Memorial Park on a report of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, they spoke with the owner of the vehicle, a 21-year-old male from Fair Lawn,
and his passenger, Nicholas Greco, age 19 of North Bergen. They stated that a dark-colored
sedan with two dark-skinned males, with one holding either a hammer or crowbar,
approached them, forced them from the vehicle they were sitting in and took approximately
$25 from a wallet. One of the actor’s then took the victim’s vehicle, while the other drove
their sedan away towards Morlot Avenue.

Det. Brian Rypkema took over the investigation and was able to determine that Greco
was part of the carjacking that had occurred. He was arrested, charged with conspiracy to
commit robbery and was sent to Bergen County Jail.

Det. Rypkema, along with Det. Anthony Lugo, Det/Sgt. Nicholas Snyder & Det/Lt. Tim
O’Shaughnessy, responded to a residence in Elizabeth with Elizabeth Police and arrested
Byron Hernandez, age 18 of Elizabeth, without incident. He was charged with carjacking
and sent to Bergen County Jail.

The other actor is currently at large and has not been identified at this time.

Driving While Intoxicated: P.O. Geovanny Buitron, P.O. Brandon Loaiza, P.O. Brad Pindyck & P.O. John Rovetto responded to 11th Street at Long Road on a report of a hit-and-run motor vehicle crash into a parked vehicle. The vehicle that fled was found disabled on Fair Lawn Avenue near 11th Street with the operator still inside. Angel Garcia-Gantier, age 34 of Bogota, was arrested after he failed a roadside sobriety test. He was released to a responsible adult after being charged with the following: Careless driving, reckless driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, failure to maintain a lane, maintenance of vehicle lamps, operating an unregistered vehicle, operating an unsafe vehicle, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash, failing to report a motor vehicle crash, driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to breath samples.
