J Zone Youth Group Travels to Jericho Road

Travel to Jericho Road with the youth group from the Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church of Fair Lawn and see how they shared with others this Thanksgiving Season.

On Tuesday evening, Nov. 27, the J Zone Youth Group of the Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church of Fair Lawn gathered in the church kitchen to prepare a very special meal.  Together the young people worked their magic to make a classic Italian meal complete with entree, salad and garlic toast for 50 people. It was exciting to see them peeling cucumbers, slicing tomatoes, shedding a tear or two over the onions and finally putting the finishing touches on the entire meal.

This meal was being prepared for a very special group of men -- namely the men of the Jericho Road Men's Home. Jericho Road is located in Paterson and it is a men's shelter that provides homeless men with a new beginning and a restored hope! The men of Jericho Road all find employment and are able to gain support and encouragement from the ministry team as well as their fellow residents at the home.

Jericho Road also has a clothing ministry in which people are able to come twice a month and "shop" in the clothing store. The best part about this store is that there is no cost involved. They also host a "food store" on the first and third Saturdays of each month and this too is a free ministry of Jericho Road.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, the J Zone Youth Group traveled to the Jericho Road Men's Home and set up and served the men supper. After everyone was served, the youth and adult leaders ate with them. This provided an opportunity for the young people to hear firsthand, stories of hardship, physical, mental and spiritual trials, and how these men were overcoming them.

Following supper, some of the men shared their testimonies and the young people were spellbound as they heard about the difficulties of living on the streets and the dangers which exist there. They were wide-eyed as they heard one of the men say that he had been shot twice and stabbed four times when he was living on the streets.

As the Youth Group traveled back home everyone agreed that they were very blessed to have been able to share with the men of Jericho Road this Thanksgiving Season!

The J Zone Youth group meets each Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at the Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church in the main building.  Everyone is welcome -- come join us!
