Charges Upgraded For Wife In Husband's Hit-And-Run Death: Prosecutor

Ammara D. Chaudhry, 33, left the scene where her husband fell off of the car she was driving, authorities said.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — The woman who was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in her husband's death tried leaving the area during a domestic dispute the couple was having, authorities said.

Ammara D. Chaudhry, 33, and her husband, Daniel Offield, 35, were engaged in a domestic dispute May 6 near their Koenig Court home in Fair Lawn, NJ.com reported, citing Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.

Offield jumped on the hood of Chaudry's vehicle to try and prevent her from leaving, Grewal said in a statement.

Offield fell from the moving vehicle af short distance later and Chaudhry fled the scene. She failed to notify the proper authorities of the incident, Grewal said in the statement.

Chaudry was arrested and initaly charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury. Offield died May 6 at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, the prosecutor said.

Chaudhry, a healthcare professional, turned herself in at the Fair Lawn Police Department Friday and was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision, Grewal said. She is scheduled to appear in Bergen County Judicial Processing Court June 2.

Chaudhry states she attended Bergenfield High School and studied sociology and history at at Kean University.

A GoFundMe page created to raise money for the family has been taken down.

A funeral notice posted online by JanzaAlert states: "May Allah forgive the deceased, and grant the family a beautiful patience."
