Dr. James P. Kane will present a slide, music and lecture program on the attack on Pearl Harbor.
At 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, the most powerful naval attack force yet assembled – including six carriers and 350 planes –was positioned 270 miles north of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu.
The first wave of Japanese bombers and torpedo planes arrived over Pearl Harbor and Oahu bases at 7:55 a.m.; the second wave arrived an hour later – and by 1 p.m. the attack carriers were steaming westward, back to Tokyo. The surprise attack left chaos in its wake, damaged much of our Pacific Fleet, killed more than 2,400 sailors, Marines, and civilians, sunk the Arizona, and plunged America into World War II.
