Fair Lawn Man Set 3 Fires, Faces Arson Charges: Prosecutor

A resident is charged after fires outside a local deli, Chase Bank branch, and on Hopper Avenue were extinguished earlier this month.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — Aggravated arson charges have been filed against a local man who is alleged to have started a string of fires in Fair Lawn on Sept. 11 and Sept. 20, The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office announced.

Yauheni Liakhnovich also faces a criminal mischief charge after police responded to three fires on two days this month.

Police first responded to a fire in the back of B&B Deli on River Road at 1:01 a.m. on Sept. 11. It was determined that wooden pallets had been set on fire outside the deli, which eventually damaged a car that was parked in the area.

Then on Sept. 20 at 4:15 a.m., police responded to a vehicle fire at 8-14 Hopper Ave. in Fair Lawn. Fire department officials eventually put the fire out, but had to respond to another shortly after at the Chase Bank at 13-51 River Rd, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Police said officials responded to the scene at 5:19 a.m. on a report of a vehicle fire in the parking lot of the bank. Officials were again able to extinguish the fire.

These three fires led to an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office Arson Task Force and Fair Lawn Police Department, which determined that Liakhnovich set all three intentionally.

Liakhnovich is charged with two counts of second-degree aggravated arson and one count of third degree criminal mischief. He was taken to Bergen County Jail, where he awaits an appearance in court.
