Fire Burns Through Roof Of Fair Lawn Home

No injuries were reported during the two-hour effort to save the home, but severe damage was done, fire officials said.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — A two alarm fire left a Fair Lawn residence with significant damage, including a hole in the roof.

Fair Lawn fire officials responded to a house fire on Pomona Avenue at 11:13 a.m. Tuesday, where they found "a heavy fire condition" located in the rear and side of the house, officials said.

For two hours firefighters battled the blaze, but eventually the roof began to collapse, forcing an evacuation.

"The fire was in the rear of the house and spreading. We made an aggressive attack inside the house but due to the heavy fire and heat, the firefighters had difficultly locating access to the attic. Consequently, the roof began to collapse resulting in the need to evacuate our firefighters from the building," Fire Chief Thomas Carney said.

Neither the residents of the home nor any of the roughly 40 firefighters on scene were injured, according to the fire department.

Fair Lawn Police, the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad and the Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corp also assisted on scene, according to the fire department.

The Fair Lawn Fire Prevention Bureau is the lead agency for the fire investigation.
