Former Bergen County Mayor, High School Principal, Teacher, And 'Cowboy' Dies

A "true cowboy" who served as principal at three Bergen County high schools, as well as mayor, has died.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A former superintendent of schools, principal, math teacher, and mayor in Bergen County has died.

Dr. Nicholas Rotonda passed away on Friday at age 87, according to his obituary.

Rotonda was born in 1938 in Teaneck, grew up in Palisades Park, got a master's in math from Montclair State, and earned a doctorate in education from California Coast University.

He went on to serve as mayor of Upper Saddle River, where he raised his four kids. He also taught math at Northern Highlands High School in Allendale, served as Principal of Lindbergh Elementary School in Palisades Park, as principal of Palisades Park High School, and eventually superintendent of schools in Rahwah, says his obit. He also owned Rotonda Construction and volunteered with the Mounted Sheriffs.
