Girls Hoops Reaches North 1, Group 4 Semifinals With Second Straight Upset Victory

In a game that went down to the final seconds, Fair Lawn escaped with a one-point road victory over Ridgewood.

In a back-and-forth defensive battle, 's girls basketball team withstood a late Ridgewood rally Wednesday night to edge the Maroons, 42-41, and continue its unlikely run in the North 1, Group 4 state tournament.

Courtney Tarleton’s jumper hit the rim at the buzzer for eighth-seeded Ridgewood, sealing a second straight upset victory for the 16th-seeded Cutters, who knocked off top seed North Bergen on Monday.

of the NJSIAA tournament, Fair Lawn earned the 16th seed when Memorial High School (West New York) dropped out. Under tournament rules, North Bergen had the right to refuse its matchup with Fair Lawn and automatically advance to round two, but instead, the Cutters now find themselves with a semifinal matchup at fourth-seeded Paterson Kennedy on Friday.

Kristina Nieves led Fair Lawn with 12 points, while Lauren Beousoleil paced Ridgewood with 17. Nieves was the only Fair Lawn player to reach double figures in scoring, but nine Cutters contributed to a balanced offensive attack. By comparison, five players scored for Ridgewood.

The Cutters led 24-23 at halftime and built a late five-point lead before Ridgewood pulled to within one with nine seconds left to play. Tarleton, however, could not convert as time expired.
