Layoffs Loom For This Century-Old Bergen County Business

A 97-year-old company in Bergen County just announced layoffs.

SADDLE BROOK, NJ — As many as 140 people will be laid off from a Saddle Brook-based business between this coming May and August, says a notice the company filed with the state.

Arrow Fastener is set to begin the layoffs May 1, says the WARN notice, filed this month.

The Saddle Brook company makes handtools, from screwdrivers to staplers. They even make a $4.99 holster to hold marker pens.

The company was founded in 1929 by Morris Abrams, according to various company histories on the web. He began by selling staples for existing staples, then patented his own stapler, as well as a hammer tacker and the popular T50 staple gun.

Last spring, they rebranded as Arrow Tool Group.

A WARN notice doesn't always mean all of the employees will be laid off; sometimes they are relocated, as was the case when Walmart recently filed a notice to lay off 100 employees in Hoboken.

Patch reached out to the company with questions. They noted that they had received the request, but did not respond by press time. Patch will update this story when they respond.

The company is still active, wishing everyone a Happy Presidents' Day on Monday on their TikTok page.
