Augmenting existing earth science instruction while providing children with a “real world” look at weather forecasting, NBC 4 New York / WNBC and Telemundo 47 / WNJU announced the launch of Weather Kids (Niños del Tiempo in Spanish), a new initiative designed to build early awareness of important weather terminology and the dangers of severe weather. Focusing on grades 4, 5 and 6, Bergen County teachers and school administrators can learn more and request a station visit by visiting nbcnewyork.com/weatherkids or telemundo47.com/ninosdeltiempo

“Our StormTeam4 weather experts are committed to keeping viewers and their families safe and informed. They also know that it is never too early to learn important weather terms and how prepare for severe weather, regardless of the season. This is why WNBC has designed this exciting new community initiative, which will offer students real-world weather instruction led by the names they know and trust,” said Eric Lerner, President and General Manager of NBC 4 New York.

The launch of this new program coincides with the height of the Atlantic hurricane season and will continue through the winter months. Through monthly visits scheduled individually by station and in duopoly, StormTeam4 and La Autoridad en El Tiempo team members will demonstrate how they track and forecast local weather. They will also offer important tips for staying safe regardless of the outside conditions and answer questions from students.

“Severe weather impacts all of us, regardless of where we live and what language we speak. Our La Autoridad en El Tiempo weather team is passionate about serving our local communities, particularly students interested in learning more about our natural environment. We are thrilled to offer our weather experts to local schools to further build greater awareness of weather patterns, terms and technology,” said Cristina Schwarz, President and General Manager of Telemundo 47.

Earlier this year, NBC 4 New York, Telemundo 47 launched Storm Tracker 4 / Tele Doppler 47 con tecnología S band, the only commercial high-frequency S-Band dual polarization fixed Doppler weather radar operating in the Northeast. Powered by one million watts of the latest, most cutting-edge technology, StormTracker 4 features a range of 50,000 square miles and can track the storm directly from ground level, providing greater insight on water droplets, hail, sleet, and approaching snow.

The addition of StormTracker 4 further strengthened the deepest, most advanced and most comprehensive lineup of weather technology available to any station within the Tri-State region, which also includes StormRanger 4 / CazaTormentas, a new and first-of-its-kind mobile Doppler weather radar truck and StormChaser 4 / BuscaTormentas, a military spec sports utility vehicle which can travel directly into the storm. To help viewers who are on the go, the station’s meteorologists and weather anchors report their local weather forecasts on the station’s popular digital platforms, which feature an enhanced weather experience and up-to-the-minute severe weather push alerts that viewers can access via station’s mobile app.
