Flemington-Raritan School Bond Could Make Cents For Taxpayers

FLEMINGTON, NJ — Flemington and Raritan Township voters will decide whether to authorize $30.3 million in borrowing for repairs and upgrades across the district’s six buildings.

The referendum will appear on the ballot Tuesday, November 3. Registration closes Tuesday, October 13.

Under the district’s “Strengthening Our Schools. Preserving Our Future.” initiative, the proposal covers infrastructure repairs, maintenance and security improvements. It includes updates to classrooms, playgrounds and shared learning areas serving students in prekindergarten through eighth grade.

District officials say the project would not increase the debt-service tax levy because older construction debt is expiring and the borrowing would cost less than the debt being retired. If voters approve it, the district projects the debt-service tax payment on an average-assessed home would decline from $246 to $186.82 in Flemington, saving $59.18. In Raritan Township, it would fall from $418 to $316.93, saving $101.07.

The state approved debt-service aid covering 40% of eligible project costs, according to the district.

“Our goal is ensuring every voter has clear, transparent information before November,” Superintendent Clifford Burns said.
