Fort Lee Firefighters Put Out 2 Fires Thursday: Report

A duplex caught fire after lightning struck it, officials said.

FORT LEE, N.J. — The fire department fought two fires simultaneously Thursday afternoon, one at a duplex that was struck by lighting and another at a medical building where an HVAC unit caught fire, The Record reported.

The duplex was struck by lightning just before 4:30 p.m. and suffered severe smoke and water damage after firefighters battled the blaze there, the report stated.

More than 40 people were evacuated from a medical building at 1355 15th St. due to a gas fire in the HVAC unit on the building's second floor, Deputy Fire Chief Lane Goldstein said in the report. That fire was quickly extinguished after Public Service Electric & Gas turned off the gas, the report said.
