Fort Lee Resident Will Serve On International College Honor Society Board
Sara Hwang is the first Bergen Community College student to earn the honor.

FORT LEE, N.J. — A borough student attending Bergen Community College was named an international vice president of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges.
Sara Hwang was elected division I vice president and will served on the Phi Theta international office team. She is the first Bergen student to earn a seat on the executive board.
Hwang also earned the Distinguished Chapter Office Award at both the international and regional levels and enshrinement into the regional chapter’s Officer Hall of Honors. She also received $3,400 in scholarships and stipends.

Other individual awards also went to Academic Vice President Dr. William Mullaney, of Hillsdale; students Samuel Desind, of River Edge, and Isaac Alejo Reyes, of Cliffside Park; and chapter co-advisor Angie Goldszmidt, of Cresskill. Professor Win Win Kyi, of Hackensack, co-advises the chapter.
The college’s chapter was named one of the top 30 Phi Theta Kappa chapters in the world. The awards were announced at the honor society’s annual conference “NerdNation” in Maryland.

Nationwide, approximately 91 percent of Phi Theta Kappa members earn an associate degree or transfer to a four-year institution, compared to the national rate of 38 percent.
