Roundup: The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen Sports Teams.

Football

The Bridgemen had a big afternoon Saturday, when they defeated rival Cliffside Park 39-35 in a nail-biter on the road. With 2:06 left in the game, Cliffside Park scored a touchdown to take the lead 35-32. Fort Lee senior Frankie Goris responded with a 55-yard touchdown run on the Bridgemen’s first possession to give Fort Lee the lead for good. Goris recorded 227 rushing yards and 71 receiving yards on the afternoon, along with five tackles and an interception. The Bridgemen take the field again on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they visit the Westwood Cardinals at 7pm.

On Monday, the Bridgemen picked up their third consecutive victory when they visited the Westwood Cardinals and recorded a 3-2 win. Senior Nick Gogic, senior Ron Locker and sophomore Alessio Guacci all scored for Fort Lee. Ron Locker also had two assists and Gogic also picked up an assist. Goalkeeper Matt Hernandez had six saves on the day. Fort Lee earned their fourth win in a row on Saturday when they hosted Dwight Morrow High School. The Bridgemen won 6-0. Nikola Gogic scored two goals for the Bridgemen who are now 4-1-1 on the season. Goalkeeper Matt Hernandez had five saves. The game was a complete team effort. Fort Lee will look to continue the streak on Monday as they travel to Lakeland High School for a 6:15 p.m. start.

The Lady Bridgemen were defeated on the road against a strong Dumont team on Tuesday. The score was 7-1 as Natalie Mateus was the only member of Fort Lee to score and junior goalkeeper Jillian Ross had 11 saves on the game. On Thursday, the Lady Bridgemen lost to a tough Lady Cardinals of Westwood team by a score of 6-2. The team fell to 2-3 and will return to the field on Tuesday when they visit Passaic Valley High School at 4:15 p.m.

Girls Volleyball

On Tuesday, Fort Lee defeated Westwood 2-0. The score of the first set was 25-20, and the score of the second set was 25-21. Nicolette Pappas had nine assists at the setter position, Stephanie Nihamin, their outside and middle hitter, had eight kills, Defne Guvenc, their outside hitter, had three aces, and Nikki Farber, their libero, recorded 5 digs. On Thursday, the streak continued as the Lady Bridgemen defeated North Bergen on the road, 2-0 (25-11, 25-17). Stephine Nihamin had five kills, Nicolette Pappas had five assists, Nicole Farber had five digs, and Defne Guvenc had four aces. The Lady Bridgemen continued their success on Friday with a 2-0 win at Dwight Morrow High School. Fort Lee won 25-8 in both sets. On Saturday in the Leonia tournament, the Lady Bridgemen went 4-0 in their pool but were defeated in the semifinals 25-23 by Hackensack. The team will return to the court on Monday September, when they visit Garfield High School at 4:15 p.m.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team was rained out this week but will return to the courts on Tuesday when they host Lakeland High School at 4:15 p.m.

Cross Country

The boys and girls cross country teams had a 26-29 “double victory” over the defending conference champions, Cliffside Park, on Tuesday at Darlington Park. Jenya Dyagilev from the boys team finished in first place with a time of 17:53.52. On the girls side, Christina Ramirez finished first with a time of 21:43.48. The XC teams will return to action on Monday, when they go up against Westwood at Garrett Mountain at 4:30 p.m.
