Starbucks Partners with Google to Boost Cafe Connection Speeds

Starbucks customers can expect to see dramatic internet speed increases in locations across the country, including right here in the Garden State.

Students, telecommuters and coffee junkies working at Starbucks locations in New Jersey will soon be getting an internet speed boost along with their double espresso.

The coffee giant has partnered with Google to increase surfing speeds up to 10 times at 7,000 Starbucks locations across the country, Google announced Wednesday.

Customers can expect to see the internet improvements in the next month, according to the search company.

Starbucks stores are currently working at 1.5 megabit speeds, according to CNET, so the bandwidth boost will likely be greeted with praise by consumers who are increasingly demanding speeds to match streaming media habits.

"We're moving to much more of a streaming world across all media types," Starbucks Chief Digital Officer Adam Brotman told CNET. "This increased bandwidth will match what consumers are doing on the Web today, whether downloading or streaming or both."

Google Fiber cities—in Kansas, Missouri, Utah and Texas—can expect speeds up to 100 times faster than those currently available. 

Both Google and Starbucks are mum on the financial details surrounding the deal.

A partnership between AT&T and Starbucks dates back to at least 2008, when the ubiquitous coffee conglomerate joined with Texas-based telecommunications multinational began offering connectivity for its customers.
