Freehold Township Man Sentenced In Fatal 2022 Crash

FREEHOLD, NJ — A Freehold Township man has been sentenced to time in prison in connection with a fatal crash in 2022, Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera said.

On Aug. 28, John DeTulio, 41, of Freehold Township, was
sentenced to a term of five years in prison by the Honorable James Hoebich, J.S.C.

DeTulio's term is subject to No Early Release (NERA) and a 9-year license suspension in connection with the crash, which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

DeTulio pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter, 2nd degree, on September 3, 2025, Estremera said.

His sentencing comes after a crash occurred at 1:25 a.m. on Jan. 28, 2022.

According to police, DeTulio was driving at a high rate of speed and under the influence of alcohol on Route 9 near Ferry Road, where he struck and killed pedestrian Harvey Berse, 69, of Old Bridge.

The investigation was conducted by officers from the Old Bridge Police Department and members of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Investigation Unit.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Lynne Seborowski.
