Gloomy Thursday Turns to Stormy Friday

Overcast skies to broken clouds with areas of drizzle and showers will linger through the day as a warm, tropical air mass takes hold over the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.  However, this gloomy Thursday will be replaced with a very stormy Friday as the cold front to the west drives through the region with heavy rainfall and potential for urban and flash flooding.

Today, the low clouds and fog will slowly lift by this afternoon leading to some breaks in the clouds and the threat for a few isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms.  Winds will veer to the southeast and south at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 60's over Long Island, lower to mid 70's over the rest of the New York City metropolitan area, and upper 70's to lower 80's over the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Tonight, overcast skies, areas of fog, and a few scattered showers can be expected.  The showers will be capable of heavy downpours at times.  Winds will be from the south at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will fall into the lower to mid 60's throughout the region for lows.

Tomorrow, a strong cold front will march through the region with widespread showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon into early Saturday morning.  The thunderstorms will be capable of wind gusts over 40 mph, occasional lightning, hail, and very heavy downpours.  Rainfall amounts of one to three inches can be expected with the heaviest rainfall expected to be over easterly Pennsylvania and western New Jersey.  Temperatures will range from the lower to mid 70's for highs.

High pressure will take hold by Saturday morning and remain in control through Wednesday.  Scattered cloud cover can be expected throughout the region with an isolated shower a threat in the afternoon hours due to passing disturbances.  Most locations will remain dry through the period.  Temperatures will fall back to below normal levels.  Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday will range from the lower to mid 50's for lows and lower to mid 70's for highs.  Temperatures on Monday through Wednesday will range from the upper 40's to lower 50's for lows and upper 60's to lower 70's for highs.
