Halloween In Freehold Township Will 'Proceed Normally’

FREEHOLD, NJ - Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and approaching trick-or-treat festivities, Freehold Township recently weighed in on Halloween protocol.

In an Oct. 7 social media post, the township stated that, as the state has not placed restrictions on allowing children to trick-or-treat door-to-door in New Jersey, the decision has been left up to local authorities to decide on any holiday restrictions.

“At this time, the Freehold Township Committee will not place any restrictions on Halloween activities within the Township of Freehold, and Halloween may proceed normally, keeping in mind that personal safety relating to the pandemic should be practiced wherever possible,” the post reads. “The Township Committee believes that parents are surely able to decide which Halloween activities are best suited for their children.”

In the same post, the township also announced the cancellation of the annual “Safe Candy Day” event at Town Hall. The event, which regularly draws more than 1,000 children and parents to the municipal complex, was scrapped due to social distancing concerns.

“Even holding a Halloween outdoor event would be too difficult to maintain the proper protective measures to avoid the spread of the virus, the post continued. “The Recreation Commission and the Township Committee are deeply disappointed at this necessary cancellation, as “Safe Candy Day” is one of the premier events of the season and a great afternoon of community togetherness.”

The event is expected to resume in 2021.
