Love for LOFT
Ann Taylor LOFT is an ideal shopping spot for the young woman entering the working world.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about “work clothes.” I find myself in that strange transition from student to working gal, wherein one realizes that all of one’s wardrobe falls under the categories of “sweats” or “party dresses.” In the search for youthful, stylish but appropriate adult wares, LOFT is a standout store.
LOFT, located upstairs near Lord & Taylor, is an extension of the brand (that store is in the outdoor shopping section). Where Ann Taylor deals in more conservative suiting and caters to a more mature, affluent career woman, LOFT targets younger women in more creative or lax work environments and with smaller budgets. For example, a suit at Ann Taylor might mean something black or gray, classically tailored pants and jacket, costing about $300; a suit at LOFT might mean a white seersucker blazer and matching shorts for about $180.
Aside from suits, LOFT features well-tailored separates; bright, breezy blouses; and simple, lovely dresses. They also have clothing that can skew more casual or more “going-out,” which is a strength of their brand. I have a LOFT blouse that I’ve worn to work, to family functions, and hanging out with friends; the versatility makes the investment (more than, say, a XXI Forever top) worth it.

The store itself is well laid-out, easy to navigate, and not overwhelmingly loud or crowded. The sales staff, to my eye, strike a happy medium of helpful without being pushy. They don’t exactly whisk you around the store telling you what you want, but if you need a size or fitting room, they are easily flagged down. Another big bonus of this store is their sale section: fairly sizable, it always has a decent selection where you can find amazing deals. This is definitely one of those stores where I beeline to sale.
Coming from an H&M and Charlotte Russe frame of mind and lifestyle, transitioning to a fully-formed adult is going to be a tough transition. But, at least sartorially, you needn’t make it kicking and screaming. With stores like LOFT, maintain your own distinct style while looking appropriate and professional, and not burning through your first meager paychecks!
