Sports Takes Freehold Attorneys to New Career Goals

Local law firm also represents aspiring professional athletes

Freehold attorney Mark Hannan has seen the sports world from a lot of different vantage points. Starting out as a fan of the New York Mets he went on to work for his favorite team before working as an assistant general manager and counsel for the Newark Bears.

Now he is taking his law degree from Fordham University and using it in a new direction as an aspiring sports agent. “I’ve grown up working in sports my whole life,” he said. “It’s just sort of when me and my partner both quit our jobs to start our own firm it allows us to have sort of that freedom to do other things like representing players as opposed to being bogged down with a bunch of corporate law work.”

Working alongside Oceanport native Robert Black Jr. Hannan said they are working to grow their practice and increase their client list of up and coming athletes. “It’s nothing too big time right now but building a client base is going to make it easier to maybe recruit bigger guys next time,” he said of his group of basketball and baseball players.

During his time in Newark Hannan saw not only younger players waiting for their shot in the big leagues, but also former stars hoping to revive their careers. So far he represents two baseball players who are working their way through the independent leagues. “We just sort of came about by being around them and knowing what kind of stuff happens,” he said. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen to them and make sure they have the opportunity to succeed.”

Leaving the front office Hannan said he is looking forward to this new endeavour and working to make the law practice and the sports agency side successful. “Being on the team side of it, I decided to stop pursuing that and do it through the legal process,” he said. “I’m enjoying being able to do what I want now that I’m basically my own boss.”

Black is already licensed to practice in New Jersey and Hannan said he should be certified by the end of the year in addition to his New York certification. Once that happens they will be able to move forward at full speed. “We’re doing a whole lot of everything right now. The sports agent, that’s just a part of it. The big picture is the firm and handling legal cases as well.”
