Termites are nothing you want to have to deal with. In 2017, U.S. homes suffered $1 billion in damages and $30 billion in total damages to crops and man-made structures – all thanks to termites. They can swarm both indoors and out. Indoors, they will emerge from walls, door frames and baseboards through tiny holes referred to as exit holes. These swarms can take up to 40 minutes as they try to find a light source. Eventually, they will die of dehydration if they can’t reach soil.
You may have come home in the past to a bunch of dead termites on your windowsills, tops of furniture and countertops. Now you know why! It’s best, of course, to determine you have a termite problem before they can swarm. Swarms are the result of mature termite colonies that send winged reproductive termites to find new colonies.
Termite swarms sometimes happen outside too, typically near porches and garage doors.

DO:

- Attempt to contain them. Simply close the door to the room. If you’re feeling brave, attach a clear plastic baggie to the exit holes to collect some of the termites.
- Vacuum them up and throw away the bag immediately. Don’t worry, they’ll die very shortly because they don’t have a long lifespan without soil.
- Bring a bag of those termites to a trained inspector or pest control expert.
- Contact a reputable termite control company. They can come out to assess your situation and suggest the best course of action.
DON’T
- Lose your cool. Remember, the termites aren’t there to hurt you. Just like any other animal that’s cornered, they are more afraid of you than the reverse. Because they are desperate to find a way out for their own survival, the swarm can cause quite a stir. Try to remain calm.
- Go crazy with a full can of insect spray. Leave the can in the basement. It won’t do any good because they are going to die anyway while in the air. No sense in wasting a can.
- Seal the exit holes with tape. Swarmers need a way to escape and will find a way. If you block their exit, they will simply create new holes. They are very resourceful!
