Using a Power Washer
Power washers clean the dirt and grime off anything from houses and cars to concrete walkways and retaining walls. Using a pressure washer yourself can be difficult, though, if you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s best to call a professional for this task, but here are some tips on how to correctly use a power washer.
Electric vs. Gas
There are two main types of pressure washers: electric and gas. They both utilize a pump that pressurizes water from a hose to a minimum of 1,000 pounds, forcing that water out through a spray wand, according to the Family Handyman. The higher the pressure goes, the more headway you’ll make in stripping caked-on dirt from a building or other structure. For residential use, you only need about 1,300 to 2,400 psi for electric models and more than 3000 psi for gas. Electric versions generally don’t make as much noise as gas ones, and they tend to be lighter as well. Gas-powered washers require more water to achieve higher psi, so these are ideal for getting deep-set stains out of wood decks or preparing siding for paint application.
Starting it Up
While electric washers are easy to start, gas-powered models require a few initial steps. Clean off any dirt that may be around the inlet filter, then connect accessories such as the chemical injector. Release air from the system by letting the water flow for a minute or so, then pull the trigger to stabilize the water pressure. A pull on the starter cord should start up the machine right away.

Turn on Water Flow
With the wand setting on low pressure so you don’t get a recoil, turn on the water, prime the pump, then start the washer. Let it warm up for a good minute or two. If there are any adjustments you need to make to the pressure, do them now. Put the nozzle tip into the wand and you’re good to go.
Tips for Operation
