30-Foot Dead Whale Washes Ashore In Atlantic City

The humpback whale was buried on site Friday, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Rough surf conditions brought it ashore.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — In the midst of terrible weather slamming the Jersey Shore, a dead 30-foot humpback whale was washed ashore in Atlantic City Friday morning.

Marine Mammal Stranding Center staff and volunteers collected tissue samples and measurements, the non-profit said on social media. The cause of death is unknown.

"As with all large whales, sample results can take several months to come back before a cause of death can be determined, if at all," the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said

Rough surf conditions brought the juvenile animal ashore, according to a report by the Press of Atlantic City.

Several whales have washed up on beaches lately. On Dec. 10, a dead humpback whale was found in Strathmere, and a few days before that, an infant sperm whale washed up in Keansburg.
