Absegami to Compete Against Cape May County Winner at Mock Trial Regional

High schools from Ocean, Camden, Cumberland, and Salem counties will also compete, beginning Wednesday.

Competition for the Absegami High School mock trial team resumes Wednesday in New Brunswick.

Absegami will be competing in the Southern Regional Competition at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick on Feb. 9 against the winner of the Cape May County local competition, co-advisor Gina Angelozzi said. Absegami won the Atlantic County local competition last week.

At the next level of competition, high schools from Ocean, Camden, Cumberland, and Salem counties will also compete.

"Whether or not we succeed in Wednesday's competition, it is still amazing that we made it this far in the competition," Angelozzi said. "We are very excited to be the Atlantic County winners. This is the first time the Absegami Team has made it this far in the competition."

Absegami edged Mainland Regional out in the final round in the local competition Thursday evening.

Judge Steven Perskie, one of two judges presiding, said that the competition was close but in the end, Absegami had faired slightly better in its deliverance of the case.

The 'trial' that the students 'tried' in court was a civil case.  The case centered around two recent high school graduates.  One student accused the other of hitting her with his car while she was on foot.

Angelozzi said the team has been getting a great deal of recognition throughout the school community since its win.

"The most rewarding part as a club advisor is that these are memories they will remember for the rest of their lives," she said.
